The visual arts have been foundational to cultures across the globe for millennia, and learning about, analyzing, and creating artworks broadens an individual’s ability to communicate, understand, and empathize. The visual arts area at NYUSH equips students with the knowledge and skills for creative expression and visual literacy through a muti layered exploration of art mediums, hands-on material experimentation, and a rigorous historical, theoretical, and critical exploration of the discipline. By learning about both conventional and unconventional art forms and through researched-based study of diverse geographical and cultural contexts, students engage with contemporary issues while gaining in-depth knowledge of their precedents. By highlighting the fundamentally interdisciplinary nature of the visual arts, faculty encourage students to explore their personal passions while helping them locate these concerns within larger discourses. Our faculty have offered courses in Art History and Theory, Book Arts, Chinese Ink Arts, Drawing, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Social Art Practices, and Time-based Art, courses that enable students to envision and actualize projects that help us reimagine our experiences and responses to the world.
