Xu Bing is a distinguished artist, Professor Emeritus of Experimental Art at the Central Academy of Fine Arts and is widely acknowledged as a leading conceptual artist working on language and semiotics. In this lecture, Xu Bing will discuss his recent works particularly his foray into space art. In 2019, Xu Bing launched the Xu Bing Tianshu Rocket project, one of the world’s first rockets launched in the name of art, has created the first stop-motion animation made in outer space, Satellite Lake: Cosmic Reflections and the Xu Bing Space Art Residency Program, an interdisciplinary platform for experts to collaborate and advance creative visions beyond the Kármán line. Reflecting on the role of space exploration in culture Xu Bing has said, “The exploration of outer space is ultimately about addressing problems on Earth.”
In addition to discussing space art, Xu Bing will share his thoughts on the relationship between art and AI. The artist believes the more AI develops the more important art becomes, as it competes with AI in order to maintain a balance in the development of civilization. In examining his recent projects and reflections on AI, Xu Bing will address a central theme: can we free ourselves from the conditioning of the art system?
