Surrealism and Seriality

Students from Photography II explore Surrealism and Freud's notion of the uncanny through the serial form.
Photography II is a praxis course that provides students with a critical examination of photography as a medium-specific discipline through the investigation of the intersection between photography and sculpture. In considering how one medium has become implicated in the understanding of the other, students will explore the materiality, physicality, and spatiality of the photographic object through the Surrealist lens. While examining Surrealism from the early 20th Century to contemporary photography with Surrealist sensibilities in the present day, students will also experiment with a variety of shooting techniques using the cell phone, webcam, and cameraless technologies, as well as working with post-production tools in Photoshop.
